“Lucky I’m in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again”
– Jason Marz “Lucky”

Falling in love is one of the most incredible and exciting part of your youth. Over time, your relationship may morph into something even greater and you realise how close you have grown to your significant other. They become your best friend and partner in crime. You feel like, together, you can take on the world!

Being best friends is a good sign of a long, lasting relationship. After all, an interview by ‘Your tango’ revealed that no relationship has ever passed the test of time without also being a friendship. Most of the time couples in long time successful marriages view their spouse as their best friend.

Best friends have a special kind of relationship, do you have such a relationship? Below are 6 signs to check if your partner is your best friend and if he/she isn’t then ask yourself why not.

1. Your partner is your safety blanket

He is the one you go to with all your problems. You trust your partner so much that you feel comfortable enough to share about your burdens. You confide in your partner for everything – when you have a bad day; when you are having trouble with something or when someone treats you badly. He is that shoulder to lean on.

Your partner is also the one you seek advice from. He knows you as well as you know yourself and he is capable of guiding you when it comes to making difficult choices. You find that he is the first person you want to text or call when something crops up. After all, best friends are the people who make your problems their problems, just so you don’t have to go through them alone.

“The best thing in life is finding someone who knows all your flaws, mistakes and weaknesses and still thinks you are completely amazing.”

2. You have more fun with your partner than with any other friends

Best friends are the people you instinctively gravitate towards because you love spending time with them. It doesn’t matter what you guys do, you will definitely have fun in each other’s presence.  In fact, sometimes it is perfectly fine for the both of you to do just about nothing and simply “chill”. The best part is that you can be yourself and act the craziest with him because you know he will never judge. If your partner is the person who entertains you more than anyone else, then your partner is also your best friend!

You may have no problem hanging out without your partner, but in the back of your mind, you want him to be a part of your outings and events and you end up bombarding them with “You should be here” texts.

“If love is the treasure, laughter is the key.”

3. Your partner can get along with your friends.

There is no doubt that you can get along with your partner and you often spend the most amount of time with him. However, it becomes a good sign when you feel that you prefer it if your partner were to hang out, even if part of a larger group of friends.  This shows that he isn’t just your lover, but also a good companion. After all, your group of friends reflect the kind of person you are; they are the ones that are as crazy and quirky as you. If your partner happens to fit in with your friends then it shows how similar you guys are.

In the first place, your partner is someone that you want to show off to your friends. You want all your friends to get to know your partner better so that they can be friends too.

“You can have friendship and you can have love, but only when you have both together, will you have a great love.”

4. You don’t fight too often, but when you do, neither of you take it to heart.

Friends can argue and get bitter but best friends never take it personally. If you can patch up quickly and forgive each other, it shows that you and your partner understand how important you relationship is. You are willing to take the time and effort to sort out your differences and frustration to come to a solution.

“Couples who fight are most likely stronger; it’s not the fighting that makes them stronger but what takes place after.”

5. You share many of the same interests.

You get along well because of common personalities and preferences. You can agree on most things and you share similar likes, dislikes, hobbies and habits with your partner. Best friends are best friends because they relate on so many different levels.

“A best friend isn’t just someone who’s always there for you. It’s someone who understands you a bit more than you understand yourself.”

6. You have numerous inside jokes with your partner.

You and your partner have been through so much and shared so many experiences that it is almost as if you can read each other’s’ mind. The two of you can burst out laughing at things that no one else understands. You can look at each other and tell what the other person is thinking. You also have self- created lingo that no one is privy to.

“Friendship is about finding people who are your kind of crazy.”

Now, think about how you are with your best friend. You tell each other everything. You look forward to being together and you freely give your time and energy to your friends. Do you do the same with your partner?

If you have a solid friendship with your partner, congratulate yourselves and celebrate your friendship this week. You will likely be together for a very long time.
