This is a guestpost by the Love Assistant at LunchClick.

Let me preface this article by acknowledging that everyone is superficial to a certain degree. The entire world treats good looking people a little better, judges them a little less harshly, and smiles at them a little more than they would normally do. And when you’re on a dating site or dating app, it’s all the more important that you choose a profile picture that will present you in a good light, so that you can stand out from the rest of the competition and get more attention!

Here’s LunchClick’s official guide, The Art of the Profile Picture. If your profile picture on our app is one that you randomly chose off your camera roll, thinking that you look decent, it’s time to step up your game! Spend a few minutes to get a good photo of yourself that will tick all the boxes of whoever you’re matched up to, and then sit and wait as the Likes start streaming in.

Lighting

Too dark and the shadows will obscure your face, too bright and we won’t be able to see your features clearly either. According to professional photographers, the best timings to take portrait pictures (when you’ll be bathed in a flattering light that makes you glow) is during sunrise, or just before sunset.

Filtering

Filtering is and has been all the rage for quite a few years now, but use it sparingly. If you’re just brightening your photo slightly and editing for contrast, that’s fine and dandy, but if you’re doing intense filtering that makes your eyes bigger, your skin smoother, or makes you look significantly different than how you do on a day to day basis, then it’s time to stop. And never use Photoshop! Misrepresentation is a thing, and when you eventually go out on a date with your match, he’ll be disappointed to see that you don’t actually look like that in real life. Don’t overpromise when you can’t deliver!

Angles

(Credits)

Pretty much everyone knows this, but we thought we’d throw it in anyway. Taking a picture from a low angle can result in an unflattering picture for even the most gorgeous people (and even more so for the rest of us mere mortals!) We’re not saying that you have to hold your camera a metre above you, but make sure that it doesn’t go any lower than eye level for best results.

Sunglasses

(Credits)

If you’re wearing sunglasses in your picture, but it wasn’t taken at the beach, chances are that you’ll come off like you’re trying to be cool. Another problem: whoever gets matched to you isn’t going to know whether you’re cock-eyed or not. Save yourself and your match all the trouble, and show off your lovely peepers.

Composition: face

(Credits)

If you’re going to upload only one picture, make sure that your face can be seen clearly! Using a picture of yourself standing on top of a mountain might be impressive because now we all know that you’re reasonably athletic. But that having been said, your match won’t really be able to tell what you look like, and that gives him all the more reason to pass instead of liking you.

If you have multiple photos, just be sure to use a close-up shot of your face as your primary photos, and feel free to upload as many mountain climbing, sky diving, hiking and snorkelling photos that you have of yourself.

Composition: friends

(Credits)

Similar to the above, if you’re going to upload only one picture, make sure that it’s one of you alone, not one of you with your friends. If you think that your match is going to analyse your photo and put in effort to figure out which one of the pictured people are you, you’re wrong. It’s not going to happen in this century, not when everyone has exceedingly short attention spans, coupled with a million things on their to-do lists!

In conclusion, we hope that these basic but essential tips will go a long way in helping you to enhance your profile picture! Remember, having a good profile picture is half the battle won, so don’t be lazy and take some time to take our suggestions into account, and watch as the Likes come streaming in. You’re welcome!
